This World Happiness Day, meet Canada’s funniest singles

If laughter is a sign of happiness, then the most joyful place to be this World Happiness Day is Leduc, Alberta; which a new study has revealed to be the home of Canada’s funniest singles.

The study looked at anonymous data from 170,000 of the Canadians registered with dating site www.elitesingles.ca to see how strongly they agreed with the statement ‘I can often make others laugh.’ These scores were then averaged out by area to determine the funniest city in Canada.

The results revealed that not only are singles in Leduc the funniest in Alberta, they are also the funniest in the country – or at least the most confident in their ability to make others laugh.

However, while Leduc residents may be the funniest, they are not the only witty singles in Canada. Indeed, just in time for World Happiness day on the 20th of March, the study has uncovered the funniest city in each of the ten provinces:

  • Alberta: Leduc
  • British Columbia: Langley & Coquitlam (tie)
  • Manitoba: Winnipeg
  • New Brunswick: Fredericton
  • Newfoundland and Labrador: St John’s
  • Nova Scotia: Halifax (HRM)
  • Ontario: Milton
  • Prince Edward Island: Charlottetown
  • Quebec: L’ÎlePerrot
  • Saskatchewan: Saskatoon

EliteSingles also looked at this same data when broken down by gender and discovered something interesting: those who still think that ‘women aren’t funny’ are quite, quite wrong.

In fact, Alberta was one of three provinces (along with Ontario and Manitoba) where men and women consider themselves equally funny. Additionally, in a further five provinces (BC, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI), women actually beat men to the ‘funniest’ title. That left just two provinces (Quebec and Saskatoon) where men outranked women on the ‘making others laugh’ scale.

And why does this all matter? EliteSingles psychologist Salama Marine thinks that we are fascinated by funny singles because humour can bring us closer to one another: ‘’Laughing together is probably the best sign of a healthy relationship for a couple. Humour and self-mockery definitely help to forge happy memories and the ability to make each other giggle with just a glance creates a strong friendship between two people.’’
