Give love a try: survey reveals that the Rugby World Cup is the ideal time for Canadian singles to get a date

Those looking for love this fall might do well to brush up their ball-handling skills: a new survey has revealed that singles go wild for fans of a certain sport (and it’s not hockey!)

  • 58 per cent of singles want to date a rugby union fan
  • 80 per cent of women, 78 per cent of men find rugby fans interesting or sexy
  • Canada has the highest percentage of rugby-mad singles in North America
  • DTH van der Merwe has been voted the sexiest member of the Canadian team

The survey, which was carried out by dating site EliteSingles, asked 2400 men and women what they think about dating, love…and rugby.

The results revealed what those in BC, Newfoundland and Ontario may already know – that rugby is an intriguing game. Indeed, 58 per cent of singles revealed that they would most like to date ‘’someone who is really passionate about rugby.’’ In comparison, 31 per cent of singles surveyed said they’d like to date someone who is into other sports than rugby (sorry, hockey fans) and just 12 per cent admitted to preferring those who hate all sport. Rugby, it seems, is the truly beautiful game.

Moreover, this desire to date a rugby fan was something shared by men and women alike. In fact, women even seemed slightly more enthusiastic than the men, with 80 per cent of women surveyed indicating that they find rugby fans interesting or sexy (as opposed to the 78 per cent of men who thought the same).

Perhaps part of the reason for this enthusiasm is that the Rugby World Cup is now just hours away – and, as the survey showed, the percentage of people who say they love the game rises during major international tournaments.

In Canada this bandwagon boost is fairly dramatic, with support for the national team more than doubling during the RWC (rising from 21 to 46 per cent). This makes Canada the most-supported North American team in the tournament: even at peak interest, the US Eagles could only drum up support from 34 per cent of singles surveyed.

So how can singles make the most of this sudden onset of RWC fever? Well, the best way to impress a rugby fan – according to the survey – is to know the rules. In fact, 41 per cent of singles would find themselves swooning over someone who could explain the finer points of an uncontested scrum or call a yellow card before the ref has raised his whistle.

Another way is to simply be Victoria’s DTH van der Merwe. Indeed, while the trophy itself may not be in reach, van der Merwe can be happy in the knowledge that he’s already won one major victory – the survey saw Canadian singles voting him the sexiest member of Canada’s World Cup Squad.
